Next Steps facilitates open, supportive conversations around any issues related to death, dying, loss and bereavement. Our aim is to help people understand that it is possible to approach death differently and to manage end of life in a more empowered way. We help you explore those difficult but necessary questions, offer support and guidance where we can, and signpost to other services if you need additional specialist advice.
Friendly conversations and mutual support
We extend a warm and friendly invitation to join us over tea, coffee, biscuits and cake at one of our regular Next Steps meetings, where you can ask questions, share experiences and reach out for support.
Our aim is to create a safe and supportive environment in which you can share conversations and find mutual support from others in the community who may be facing similar situations.
Practical advice and signposting
Our team has access to a wealth of information and support, in the form of personal experience, professional training, leaflets, books and organisational contacts.
We will offer guidance and support to the best of our ability, in line with our experience and qualifications, and will do our best to answer any questions you may have.
If we are unable to provide the information or support you need, we will do our best to signpost you to someone who can.
The Next Steps team are able to offer advice or signpost on subjects such as:
- Writing a will
- Preparing an Advance Decision
- Lasting Power of Attorney
- Funeral Planning
- How to support someone who is dying
- Helpful services in your area
Guest speakers and helpful workshops
Some months we invite guest speakers, such as:
- Funeral Directors
- Soul Midwives (End-of-Life Doulas)
- Dementia Awareness Specialists
- Medical professionals (GPs or nurses)
- Palliative Care Specialists.
Talks usually last about an hour, allowing plenty of time for questions, further discussions and of course, more tea and cake.
We also run half or one-day workshops such as:
- Next Steps to planning a funeral
- Next Steps to Advance Directives
- Next Steps to Power of Attorney
- Next Steps to my End of Life Plan
Talks and events will be advertised here on the website, on social media and in our regular newsletter.
“Behind the scenes” visits
A natural burial ground, cemetery, crematorium or undertaker does not usually feature high on people’s list of places to visit. However it can be helpful and even comforting to familiarize yourself with these environments, before you become too unwell, or before you are grieving the loss of a loved one.
Potential places for us to visit are:
- South Hams Natural Burial Ground (Churchstow)
- Sharpham Natural Burial Ground (Totnes)
- Torquay Crematorium
- Kingsbridge Funeral Directors
